Faith Filled & Accountable Leadership Reflective of the Needs of Ajax
Although the Trustee role has recently changed to limit Trustee oversight and advocacy, Trustees must continue to be faith filled leaders accountable to the constituents they serve. As a DCDSB parent for 10+ years, an Ajax resident for 14+ years and a member of my parish family for the same amount of time, I understand the every day needs and desires of my community. I am present in the community to hear the concerns and I always try my best to facilitate a resolution when concerns are brought to my attention.
I plan to continue to support our entire education system and listen to the needs of our students, teachers, administrators, families, clergy and community. Catholic education is not just about academics; it is also about formation and fostering an environment where academic success and faith go hand in hand. Trustees are called to be stewards of this system and I plan to continue to be a strong advocate for the home/school/parish relationship and lead our system with humility, love and leadership reflective of our gospel values.
Fiscal Responsibility & Advocacy
I believe our children are an investment in our future.
The strength of a system depends on its overall health. Our system requires appropriate financial resources to function at its best. There have been areas of our system that have been chronically underfunded for years (such as special education).
Over the next four years, my focus will be to continue to advocate for the financial needs and health of the entire system and continue to support fiscally responsible decision making.
Student Success & Well-Being
Supporting the academic needs of students, especially our special education students, continues to be an area of focus for me. But, student success and well-being cannot be measured by academics alone. Our children are facing increasing levels of mental health challenges and our system is ill-equipped to support these needs. Teachers are over stretched trying to balance the academic needs of their students with other needs. An investment in our children, requires a wholistic understanding of today's student. I will advocate for increased mental health supports for our children which will inevitably translate to academic achievement.
Safe & Welcoming Schools
I will continue to support and advocate for an inclusive, equitable , anti -oppressive and human rights based approach for our system. Four years ago, this was a goal I campaigned on, and it continues to be a priority for me. My goal: diversity among our educators, equity in our approach to education / academic achievement, fostering an inclusive environment that is safe for all kids and ensuring our schools remain accessible for all students. As a Trustee, my role in supporting school safety is to ensure our policies are current and reflect the needs of the system. But school safety is not only achieved through policies and procedures. My goal to promote safer schools: better understanding the experiences of our educators, administrators and all who work in our schools - this is a necessary component to ensuring our schools are safe for all.
Parent Voice + Student Voice
The last four years have taught me the importance of student voice. I have sat with our student senators and have listened first hand to their concerns and desires. Parent voice is always important and so too is student voice. I look forward to continuing to support the Student Trustee role and the work of our student senators and student councils to highlight the needs of their student bodies. Trustees cannot make responsible informed decisions without considering the voices of our students.
